In Medieval times rings were worn to show the wearer made some form of promise. Today promise rings are still worn because the wearer and perhaps the giver have exchanged a promise. Or perhaps the wearer of these promise rings has made a promise to themselves so they have purchased a ring to reinforce that commitment or to let others know they have made and intend to make and keep that commitment. They can come in different forms just as there are many different reasons to wear or exchange them.
Reasons For Giving A Promise Ring
Generally promise rings are intended to be worn when you make a promise that keeps some type of commitment. The commitments that promise rings are exchanged or given for maybe a promise of chastity until you are married. It may be worn by either a male or a female. It may be for promises to keep your beliefs in god or your church of choice or a promise to obey the tenants of your chosen religious faith. They may be exchanged between two friends when making that commitment to stay faithful during the entire relationship. It is intended to signify a promise that is one you intend to keep.
Wearing A Promise Ring
If you have exchanged promise rings between two friends the promise ring can be worn on really any finger. There are no firm rules regarding which finger the promise rings belong on. In the middle ages people often wore rings on every finger. There is no reason why you can’t wear more than one promise ring if you choose to. Also a promise ring is not restricted to just a female wearing them. Men wear rings too so there is no reason a boy or young man can’t wear one too. Since the reasons for wearing them are so varied it would be proper for a man to want to keep that special promise also.
Exchanging Promise Rings
Promise rings may be exchanged between two good friends you are dating and perhaps looking to share a future together. So if ne party intends to remain chaste until marriage certain both of them can do so. Certainly this is true if the promise is for chastity during a relationship or until marriage and each person gave the other person in the relationship a matching promise rings to commemorate this very special promise between two young people.
